informations about producer

Fratelli Bortolin, a family-run winery located in the town of Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, in the heart of Prosecco’s wine production zone, Valdobiadene and Conegliano. Valeriano Bortolin, the owner, and his sons make probably most famous fizz in the world.

The history of the family dates back to the year 1542, in which according to the documents from the Archives of the Treviso State a winemaker called Zan Bortolin from the town of S. Stefano di Valdobbiadene, grew 17 pieces of land and made 20,5 conzi of wine (conzo equals 100 liters).

Between the First and Second World War Valeriano Bortolin (namesake of the present owner) took part in wine exibitions and competitions organized in many cities of Italy, and won medals and awards for the quality of his wines.  All these awards are carefully kept up to the present day. Then the wines labelled by Bortolin were mainly sold locally, in the cities of Treviso, Padova and Venice, in big glass vessels and also in bottles.

In 1950 the heirs of Valerino Bortolin started modernizing the winery, to produce sparkling wines using Charmat method. Then the first  autaoclave tanks and modern bottling equipment were bought. Currently, the company owns 20 ha of vineyards located in variuos zones: from Cartizze to Valdobbiadene, in the towns of Farra di Soligo, Follina and S.Pietro di Faletto near Conegliano. Apart from the vineyards belonging to the family, the grapes are bought from the trusted grapegrowers from Valddobiadene. Fratelli Bortolin make 300 000 bottles of spumante annually, mainly DOCG (Dry, Extra Dry and Brut) and Valdobbiadene DOCG Superiore di Cartizze, and also Extra Brut.
