informations about producer

Casa Maschito, a small winery from the town of Maschito located in Basilicata. The estate was not easy to find, but certainly it was a good idea to visit this region of Southern Italy, not yet discovered well, because we met wonderful people there and were charmed by their straightforwardness and hostility. Like Antonio Griesi, the main stockholder.

His own history reflects the stories of life of people from South Italy. Antonio has returned to Maschito after many years he lived in Milano. As a young boy he left his homeland with a cardboard suitcase to seek work and money. He succeed in finding both, yet he was continuously inventing plans to return. He finally decided to repurchase the vineyards once sold by his parents which he planted with vine. He released the first bottlings in 2001.

Moreover, he beautifully renovated family’s villa, in which he stored many family mementoes. His mother was Albanian. Actually the traces of Albanians are still very evident in Maschito, as they arrived in Basilicata when escaping from the persecution by the Turks at the beginning of the XX century. Antonio takes care of all things that are proof of his identity and speaks of his roots with pleasure. In the cellar of his trim house he put barrels for wine ageing. Outstanding Aglianico that comes from his vineyards probably is so good, because it ages in such a unique place, filled with tranquility and ancestors’ memories.

Aglianico from the surroundings of an inactive volcano, Vulture, is the best wine of our friend from Maschito. However, we were delighted by beautifully aromatic whites, Moscato and Malvasia, too.

In search of authentic wines we succeed in finding Lucania, a region in which not only wines are authentic but also its inhabitants. Modest, diligent, frank like Antonio.

A dry white wine from the Moscato Bianco, a Moscato Reale variety from the surroundings of Maschito in Basilicata. It was clearly understood that we were delighted by red Aglianico, but the Biancospino (Italian for hawthorn) was a complete surprise to us. We haven’t  long drunk such aromatic Moscato, in addition made as a ‘’secco’’ or dry wine. The aroma of ripe white grapes and equally ripe orange growing under southern sun can delight everybody, almost brilliant color encourages to taste endlessly. Stunning, especially for lovers of moderate dry wines, and certainly for ladies.
