informations about producer

Cantine Sant’Agata, a family-run winery from the town of Scurzolengo, the cradle of Ruché wine. Sant’Agata or Saint Agatha is the patroness of the town, the figurine of which is found in the immediate vicinity of the family’s estate. In this splendid corner of Piedmont the Cavallero family planted their first vineyards with Ruché variety in the 1980s. From this grape is made a unique wine, beautifully aromatic and dstinguished by rose notes,  but still lesser-known and scarcely appreciated.  From that moment on the Cavallero brothers have divided their roles to offer wine on the local and global market successfully. Claudio, enologist by profession deals with vinegrowing and winemaking, whereas Franco, always fond of travelling, energetically and skilfully manages marketing and sales. One of the watchwords of the company is no legno or no wood in the production of Ruché to enhance the entire potential of varietal’s aromas without using oak barrels which could weaken a unique potential of this wine.

Apart from the already mentioned Ruché in the range of wines from Cantine Sant’Agata are also other Piedmont’s  traditional varieties, Barbera and Grignolino. All their wines, besides original labels, are characterized by authenticity or so called piemontesità of which speak proudly the brothers and the founder of the winery, Giuseppe Cavallero.

A dry red wine of Piedmont‘s native grape, Ruché. This grape is present only in the surroundings of seven towns of the Monferrato zone, among which Castagnole and Portacomaro. Probably the variety was introduced here by friars already in the Middle Ages and planted around a monastery of Saint Rocco, which doesn‘t exist any longer, hence the name. The name of the wine, Na Vota, in the piedmontese dialect signifying the beginnings or a challenge. The year 1990 was a challenge for the Cavallero brothers, because their Ruché was harvested for the first time. If there are unique wines that can‘t be made elsewhere than its own, proper territory, Ruché is certainly among them. This wine is made from a selection of grapes derived from four Cantine‘s vineyards. Depending on quality every year the yields from certain vineyards are different. Chalky soils are ideal for growing of this aromatic variety. The entire process of fermentation and ageing is given only in stainless steel tanks, therefore this wine maintains its unique aroma and freshness.
Color: ruby red with violet reflections.
Aroma: rich, complex, notes of orange peel, musk, rose, pepper.
    Flavor: soft, gently tannic.
Food matching: excellent with cured meats, grilled meats, roast pork ribs.

A dry red wine of Piedmont‘s native grape, Grignolino. It‘s one of interesting wines of Piedmont, however a lesser known and scarcely appreciated by wine connoisseurs (apart from declared fans of Piedmont). Pity because Grignolino is an extremely delicious wine. It combines the delicateness of colour and aromas with the richness of structure, goes well with many dishes, from cured meats, through white meats, even up to fish. As the variety is hard to grown not every year it is possible to transform grapes into wine. The classic zone of its cultivation is in the surroundings of the town of Portacomaro. Miravalle with sandy soils belongs to its subzones and yields excellent quality grapes of Grignolino. An unoaked, great, little wine, delighting by the simplicity of varietal.
Color: light ruby red with orange reflections.

A dry red wine of Piedmont‘s native grape, Barbera, in the Superiore version or with higher alcohol levels and from a special selection of grapes. The most popular grape variety of Piedmont, has, of course, its legend which explains its name. The king of the Longobards, Grimoald, liberated the city of Asti in 665 from the Franks which were perceived as barbarian invaders. This was done successfully thanks to the strong local wine that was given to the Frank troops and made them drunk. Hence, from that moment on the wine that was drunk by barbarians has been called Barbera. To celebrate this victory Grimoald ordered that Barbera is an obligatory accompaniment on the royal table. Even several centuries after the events this wine still delights by its power and character, what is best proved by Altea. 80% of this wine is aged for more than 12 months in French oak large barrels of 700 litres called tonneaux, and 20% in barriques. Then, the batches of wine are blended and bottled. A stunning wine for people that can appreciate the charm of Piedmont‘s authentic wine.
