Informations about region

Marche, a region of Italy located along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, bordered by the Republic of San Marino and Tuscany to the north and Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo to the south. It has an area of 9 693 km2, the majority of the area is hilly, as many as 31% consist of mountains. The range of the Sibillini Mountains reaches 2000 metres, and the most famous and beautiful place of the hilly region of Marche is the Frasassi Caves, caverns composed of limestone. Depending on the height of the area and vicinity to the sea the climates of Marche change from Mediterranean to Continental, however with lots of sunshine. Among other things, because of this the vine has dominated here for thousands of years. Currently, the area of Marche‘s vineyards is almost 19 000 hectares, mostly planted with white grapes, among which also famous Verdicchio. The first wine growers and propagators on these areas were the Etruscans. In Roman times the wines of Marche were well-known, particularly those from the surroundings of Ancona and Ascoli Piceno. During the Middle Ages winegrowing methods were gradually developed. According to documentary evidence of the archives of Ministry of Agriculture dating back to the XIX century, besides the already mentioned Verdicchio were planted also Trebbiano, Albano, Biancame, Trebianello and red wines such as Sangiovese, Vernaccia and Lacrima. All these varieties are cultivated in the region up to the present including famous Montepulciano 5 wines were classified as DOCGs, among which Verdicchio from the Jesi and Matelica zones in the Riserva version, Vernaccia di Sarrapetronna - a black Vernaccia from the surroundings of Macerata and wines such as Offida and Conero. Other wines of Marche belong to 15 various DOC appellations.

As for Verdicchio it‘s a unique wine indeed. The soil, exposition to the sun, blowing winds and rain make the wine takes on some personality depending on the zone, in which the grape yields and grows. Only a few white wines can provide Riservas, while Verdicchio, if the vintage is good, gives great white wine that can delight by richness of its aromas and structure even after many years.

Of note but less famous whites are Pecorino, Bianchello del Metauro and Passerina, among reds dominate Montepulciano along with Sangiovese. The wine labelled Roso Conero is a successful blend of these two varieties.
