Trentino-Alto Adige (Trentino-Alto Adige-Südtirol) - an autonomous region of Italy, having a separate status, located in the northern part of the country with an area of only 7,400 km2. It is a typical mountain region of the Dolomites range that has one of the highest peaks - Marmolada with its famous glacier at an altitude of 3,300 m
Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions, characterized by large temperature differences between seasons and between day and night, the Alto Adige‘s said that it‘s a
small region of great wines
. There is more than five thousand hectares of vineyards that give high-quality grapes. Here, too, the wine-growing tradition dates back to the Etruscan and Roman times.
br>The most common grape is the Schiava, precisely its three varieties, grossa, grigia and gentile, which gives a fine red wine, typical of the areas of Bolzano (zone Gries), Santa Maddalena and Lago di Caldaro (Lake Caldaro). Another well known is Lagrain, which gives the wine a stronger structure and perfect harmony so-called
dunkel
, especially after a period of aging. Lagrain also has a Riserva version, for good vintages, and can also be vinified as a rosé wine -
Kretzer
.
But perhaps most associated with the mountain region is an aromatic white strain, in German called Gewürztraminer - Aromatic Traminer. It is cultivated in the classic zone of the town of Termeno - Tramin. It‘s characterized by the intensity of the aroma, with a hint of lychee fruit. Alto Adige is a real wealth of aromatic grapes, such as Moscato Giallo and Moscato Rosa - Moscato pink and Moscato yellow and splendid white wines, such as Kerner, Müller Thurgau and Sylvaner.
In addition to the tourist attractions of the Alto Adige, famous for its perfectly groomed ski slopes, anyone who appreciates really good and unique wines, will find here the wine, which will be happy to come back.
